Day 16

The almost completed yurt. we still have to lace the roof and walls together.

Our puppies on guard. they have 2.5 acres to run/sit/play/sleep in but they are always touching each other!

I set up the hammocks today. The pictures don't do the view justice...

Part of the hammock view. All the mountains towards Carcross and Skagway Alaska.

Day 15

This is a big day - and a very surprising one. we were able to set up the big yurt in 3 hours! i was expecting 3 days. HUGE thank you to everyone!

First you install the back door

Then you admire the hardwood flooring

Then you install the front french doors

Then you spread the latice wood around. There are two parts.

Then you lace a steel wire through the tops of the lattice. This is what supports the log rafters.

Jesse, Sylvain and Norm installing the rafters.

Spreading the wall covering

The wooden frame completed

Pulling the roof through the centre ring and up onto the log rafters. A bit of work

Day 14?

This is the day we finished the big mutha yurt platform! We have to level the cement blocks, then use surveying equipment to cut 4x4s so they are the proper length. then we place the 4x4 beams on the cement blocks. THEN we put the yurt flooring on it! With the help of 20 people...

Day something

Hi there! I have pictures, they are just sitting in my camera about 5 kms away... we have had a super last couple of days. yesterday, with the help of about 15-20 people, we were able to move all the pieces of the big yurt to the property. it is GORGEOUS. sylvain and my uncle did an amazing job.

tonight we are going to try to set up the big yurt, although i think it will take all weekend. weather is great, sylvain and i have had mandatory "beer in hammock" this afternoon. we set up a hammock so it stares straight at the snow covered mountains... one more week and we will be able to enjoy all of this!!!

I will try to post some pictures tomorrow.
HUGE thank you to everyone who has helped us - it means so much to us!

Day 13

We can see the weather really well from our site - that is luckily heading west of Haekle Hill and not to porter creek where our precious hardwood is sitting! This is the finished platform for the 12 foot yurt.
yesterday we did a tonne of work and no camera action. we now have 6 of 8 28' yurt flooring pieces at the property and all the footings for the platform. slowly but surely...

Day 12

Again - no formatting - sorry! Busy day this day. Sylvain is multi-tasking by drinking coffee and having a nap at the same time. The tarp is to protect our flooring so we can finally finish. whitehorse has been plagued by a gazillion mini rain storms in the last two weeks. the truck is carrying our big mutha yurt!!!

Day 11

These are just randon pictures from Sunday's initial move out to the property. We are unloading the 8, 12, and 20 foot yurts.

Day 10

Well, today's weather sucked. Just enough rain that we couldn't work on the hardwood flooring that is sitting outside. Then there was a power outage - so we took a nap for 2 hours. Much needed!! When we started work again it was 9pm and we moved some of the tools from my uncle's house to the shop at my parent's house. Time to start the second 20 foot platform!!

While Sylvain was working on the platform (no pictures - imagine the same circular floor but just a bit smaller!), Uncle James and I were working on the benches for the property. He had some extra cedar bits and pieces lying around, and we made them into these great benches! Definitely the highlight of the day.

Other news, our composting toilet has arrived in Whitehorse, our solar energy system has been delivered and now we are just awaiting our final pieces of furniture to come here. Lots of time - opening isn't until May 28!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

These are the ends for the benches before they are trimmed to how we like them. I spent a few hours sanding them last week.

Our almost finished product - Boréale Mountain Biking's new bench!

I made Sylvain come and check out my new bench. Tres cool!

Moving Dad's precious bike out of harm's way!

Day 9

Well, we missed a few days on the blog. not too much to report because we were doing small finicking things and it was blizzard conditions here. Not much progress whatsoever.

Today we started laying the hardwood for the big yurt. We were trying to work fast considering this rain/snow cloud was right above us...

The fully circular kitchen/living room yurt floor

Sylvain learning how to lay hard wood - it is gorgeous!

Hours later, and with Uncle Jimmy's help!

The mess...

The crew!

Day 6

Well, we just threw in this picture. Not much progress today. It was raining and miserably cold. Tomorrow will be better!!!

Sunday, May 11, 2008

Day 5

Today was non-stop for 12 hours. I think we moved about 6000 lbs in total today, between moving the hardwood and all the timber we need for the big kitchen/living room yurt. We're tired.
This is my picnic table - almost completed!

And on closer inspection... I see Jack the menace got to the table before the stain dried! Now I have dirty puppy prints imbedded on my table!

Uncle Jimmy graciously donated his driveway to the cause of making the big yurt platform and laying of the hardwood.

I can't even get it all in one picture!

Sylvain making beams for the base.

Over the next couple of days... the laying of the hardwood floors. Those planks are going to be HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY!!!!

Day 4

Well, things are progressing slowly but surely. Sylvain caught a nasty 12 hour bug/food/beer poisoning (we're not sure which) and that set us back a day. But - we do have two finished platforms done now! And sort of three if we count the one that our set up yurt is sitting on. It has to be redone to allow for annual set up and take down, but at least it is in circle shape.

This is our bathhouse yurt floor made of cork. It makes us really happy when squares turn into circles!

Day 2/3

Slight delay today - Sylvain seems to have caught some crazy puking bug. not the best timing. Hopefully we will be at the property full time as of Sunday.

We can't remember if it is 3000lbs of hard wood flooring or 5000 lbs... believe it or not, but it is sylvain with the higher number! I am SOOOOO looking forward to moving that again.

Turco

This is the 95% finished flooring of our bathhouse yurt. We are using cork flooring which is just being flattened right now.

Sylvain with our necessary evil - the diesel generator. We are employing solar energy, and have this as a backup.

Another circular accomplishment.

A finished platform! This is for a 12 foot yurt - our new bedroom!
